The eighth annual Run for Congo Women Portland took place on August 4, 2012 and was a huge success! We had 220 runners and raised more than $12,000 for Women for Women International's Congo program which provides women survivors of war around the world with rights awareness training, business skills, and seed money to start a business to support themselves and their families. I am so proud of the Portland community who supported us and for being able to be part of such a wonderful organization! This was my third RFCW and while this was not the biggest run we've hosted, it was the happiest, most gratifying event I have been a part of. Maybe it was because I have now worked with the same three women whom I adore (we started as a group of 10 and will soon be a group of2!) and we work like a well oiled machine, but rather I think it was such a beautiful day because of all the love and support that flowed from everyone including JSM who kindly shuttled the volunteers back and forth along the trail in his 'burban. We knew exactly what we needed to get done, we did it, and had plenty of energy left over to actually enjoy the run! It's probably helpful that we had fewer participants, but truthfully, we were ready for whatever the day held and I'm glad it was peace, joy, happiness and well wishes for our sisters of the Democratic Republic of Congo!
