Snow Falling on Cedars

We woke up to a surprise snow shower on Wednesday morning! We weren't expecting that at all. I guess we haven't been watching enough local news. As I watched Jeff walk out the front door at 7:30 I said to myself, "is that rain?"  Within an hour I was without power and by 9:45 we had an inch accumulated in the backyard! The front yard is never a good gage for snow since most of it never sees any! We have three 60 foot cedar trees that provide so much coverage that the snow gets trapped in the branches and never falls to the ground. No wonder our grass looks so sad.....if it doesn't get snow that means it doesn't get much sun either! But that's for another day.....

This peaceful little reprieve of quiet snow provided the perfect backdrop to sip a cup of coffee and finish The Zookeeper's Wife. It was an interesting and true story about a Catholic family who used their zoo to hide Jews in Warsaw and surrounding areas during WWII by giving human names to animals and animal code names to humans. Amazing! I have read many books on this subject and I even took a course in college on the Holocaust (the professor would come from Harvard to FSU every week to teach.) The stories haunt me to this day. Because of the generous and courageous support of the zookeeper and his wife, this book had a very different ending.

Today, you would never guess that snow fell just 48 hours ago. There are no remnants of white or even ice. So, I will head into Portland and see what this "lucky day" at the library will bring. Maybe something light with a little history or maybe something completely made up and fun! Perhaps a little inspiration for our yard with a book on gardening? Who knows? You never know what to expect around here!
