It's off to work I go! It's official, today was my first day of orientation for my new position as Librarian Substitute at the Fort Vancouver Community Library in downtown Vancouver. JSM is breathing a sigh of relief (something about idle hands and the devil's workshop) and I am, too, because after 7 years or so I will finally be paid to do something I love! And I can serve the community I live in which is truly a wonderful opportunity. So, this morning a little before 8 am I joined 59 other new hires in the Columbia Meeting Room of the brand new facility to learn about the history, hierarchy, and the importance of customer service in the public library. I have a week of district training before I have specialized training in reference/readers advisory where I will learn to use the databases and library subscriptions. I should be ready to take on shifts by mid-July! As a substitute I will not have a regular schedule, but I will have an opportunity to fill in when librarians go on vacation, take time off work, or they need an extra set of hands. In the meantime, these hands will be busy taking notes so that when my time comes I will be ready to answer questions, recommend books, and serve the local community!
