Last week was "Spring Break" so I had a lot free time to tackle some of the projects I've been putting off, setting aside, or generally avoiding. First on the list was the closet in the den. I had high hopes of turning the closet into a little sewing room, but that's never going to happen unless I go through the papers, set up file cabinets, organize the craft supplies, clean out the chest of drawers, find a place for the pieces of luggage, and move the 3 sewing machines that have all been hiding in there since we moved in. Whew! That was overwhelming so in typical fashion, I stumbled upon my cross stitch supplies and decided maybe it would be more fun to work on a craft project instead. No wonder the "sewing room" is a figment of my imagination!
I smiled when I opened the cross stitch kit as it was exactly as I had left it 5 years ago when I started a little "McNally family" sampler when JSM and I were engaged. Unfortunately, I can't find the unfinished sampler (surprise, surprise) but I do have a brand new piece of needlework fabric and every color of floss under the sun. I am famous for starting projects and not finishing them, or buying all the supplies and never starting the projects. Sadly, this is no exception. Cross stitch isn't a hip hobby, but it is inexpensive, satisfying, and Martha Stewart profiled this classic craft in the March 2011 issue of Living. Not to mention you can produce a wall hanging in a number of hours that will last for generations. In fact, I have one that was handed down to me by my mother-in-law, who received it as a gift many years ago. It was lovingly stitched by one of her friends and today it hangs in my house as an homage to the family JSM came from and the one we hope to have someday.
Later in the week I headed to Cool Cottons in SE Portland with a friend. Once inside I forgot about my cross stitch project and bought a beautiful piece of fabric and a new pattern.
Here I go again! My week off has already passed me by and my little projects remain incomplete. At least I finished a book. As for the craft projects.....maybe I'll finish one before summer. Such is the life of a jack of all trades who is a master of none.
