Rest and Rejuvenation.....at a Library Conference?

I've taken some time away from the blog (obviously) but not for any reason in particular. OK, I did need a week to recover from my last post since it was emotionally draining, but it was the most liberating thing I've ever written. I instantly felt lighter, free, and more hopeful. Since then, I've just been thinking and doing and reading and traveling. I've considered how far I've come in the last two years and where our life is headed (no absolutes yet!) I finally read Brene Brown's Daring Greatly which I loved and I am taking some much needed time to visit my parents, sisters, and niece in Florida. In between, I stopped in Indianapolis for the PLA (Public Library Association) bi-annual conference where I learned a lot about leading with emotional intelligence, automated materials handling machines (AMH), and happiness in the library (but I already know about that!)

In honor of my One Little Word (faith) I took some time to visit a few churches while in Indianapolis. I'm not a very religious person, but I love churches and I had a free afternoon. The architecture, ritual, quiet, and sanctuary found in them just puts a smile on my face. Indianapolis isn't a beautiful city necessarily, but it is a conservative and religious one and home to some historic houses of worship so I felt compelled to step inside.

The Indianapolis Star boasts a biblical quote on its daily front page.

I LOVE stained glass windows.

Churches are so welcoming. I found another church on my tour of downtown..... this one an Episcopal Cathedral.

Beautiful.

I also took some time to visit the Indianapolis Public Library (Central Branch) which is now my favorite library of all time! It was one of the original Carnegie libraries and in the last decade has undergone a renovation. The transition between historic and modern is seamless and the incorporation of wooden shelves and casework throughout the building gives it a timeless feel.

A bit of history through an exhibit on the first floor.

Popular fiction

Such beautiful woodwork!

One of the original inscriptions in the reading room. "Time by minutes slips away. First the hour and then the day. Small the daily loss appears yet it soon amounts to years." Just what I needed to hear given my obsession with time and my fear that it is slipping away.... yikes!!

The Children's area with pods to sit in.

Because......a librarian can help you answer them!

Five days in Indianapolis, some library fun, and some rest and relaxation and I'm ready for a vacation....... in Florida!
XOXO

  1. My goodness that library is incredible. When I was little I either wanted to be a librarian or a primatologist---and now I am neither. Living vicariously through you Kimmy!
